Located at the top of our hill, immediately adjacent to the winery, is “Top Block”, a three acre parcel planted in 1998 to the Estrella River Valley clone of Syrah. We produce our Top Block Syrah in the tradition of the northern Rhone where the syrah is often fermented together with Viognier, producing a wine with distinct characteristics. We have grafted a single row of Top Block over to Viognier so we can harvest these two grape varieties as a field blend to produce a wine with floral aromatics, deep color and a silky texture.
A short distance from Top Block, is Ellen’s Block, planted in 1998 to the Estrella River Valley clone of Syrah. Ellen’s Block Syrah is produced as a pure (100%) Syrah in order to highlight the complexity of this variety when grown in cooler climates such as the Russian River Valley.
Ellen’s Block is a small, 1 ½ acre parcel on a southerly facing slope. The soil type is Spreckels loam and is heavily interspersed with river bed rock, suggesting that this area may once have been a tributary of the Russian River.
