Russian Hill Estate Winery Fact Sheet
Edward Gomez and Ellen Mack established Russian Hill Estate Winery in 1997 after a two-year intensive search for an appropriate site to grow and make great Pinot noir, feeling it imperative to have control over both aspects of wine making – the vineyards and the winery. Their estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley were planted in 1998, the winery built in 1999 and a tasting room opened in 2003.
At the helm of winemaking at Russian Hill Estate is Patrick Melley, Ed and Ellen’s nephew. A self taught winemaker, Patrick developed his interest in wine as a restaurant manager where he evaluated and developed wine lists for a wide range of restaurants. Rapidly becoming known as a rising star amongst Pinot noir producers, his goal as a winemaker is to produce elegant, textural wines that express their place of origin.
The home site of Russian Hill Estate was planted to Pinot noir and Syrah in 1998 and produces Tara Vineyard Pinot noir and Ellen’s Block and Top Block Syrah. The last land to have been cleared at the winery is a western slope that was planted to Syrah in 2002. Sunny View Vineyard, located in the southeastern portion of the Russian River Valley, approximately five miles from our winery, was planted in 1999 and is the source of much of our Estate Vineyards Pinot noir. Viognier grown at Sunny View Vineyard is sold to several prestigious producers.
Russian Hill Estate Winery specializes in Estate grown Pinot noir and Syrah although its production also includes Chardonnay, Pinot noir and Syrah from select vineyards in our area.
Our Estate and vineyard designated wines are delineated by our new, lighter colored label. For Pinot noir, this includes our Estate Vineyards, Tara Vineyard, Leras Vineyard and Meredith Vineyard wines. The Syrah wines include our Ellen’s Block, Top Block and Windsor Oaks Summit. Our sole white wine, Gail Ann’s Chardonnay is sourced from a Dutton Ranch vineyard contiguous with our own estate vineyards.
Our “Russian River Valley” designated wines, a Pinot noir and a Syrah, carry our traditional red and black label and come from select, small growers from our appellation. The sources produce wines that exemplify the essential qualities of the Russian River Valley.
Our Tasting Room has become known for its “wine with a view” as it provides the opportunity to taste great wines while overlooking some of the most beautiful vineyard views of the Russian River Valley.
